A fiber media converter is a type of computer network device, more specifically, a media converter that focuses on converting network signals into different media types, specifically on fiber optics. In other words, it translates the signals coming from copper-based Ethernet cables and then translates them into fiber optic cables, and then reverses the process if need be. This type of converter helps integrate fiber optic technology to pre-existing network configurations which improves network reach, increases bandwidth as well as improves the resistance to electromagnetic radiation. It can also be used in enterprise networks to switch copper-based segments to fiber optic cables and offer better performance, or in industrial applications where the need for sturdier and more reliable fiber optic cables make them the better choice
